Babangida: "I Will Vote For An Igbo President In 2019 If I Find One"

Ibrahim Babangida, former military president, says he is ready to vote for an Igbo president in 2019.

Speaking with The Interview, a magazine focused on leading professionals and politicians, IBB, as he is fondly called, described the agitation for Biafra republic as a distraction.

“We do not need this distraction now,” he was quoted as saying, adding that “I will vote for an Igbo president in 2019, if I find one.”

He also revisited one of the most controversial issues involving him – the death of MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 election.

This incident happened on friday, the 27th of November at asaba. I was heading to the MTN office along the expressway when I saw about 5 Brand new 2015 model Land cruisers and a Hilux van being chased by some Custom guys; those custom officers were on Pathfinder truck. You dont need a prophet to be told that those cars were coming in from lagos or even Cotonou. It was learnt that those cars were driven by professional 'fire-wor' chauffeurs that are ready to kill any officer (police inclusive) if they are stopped at any check point. Those cars do not have custom papers and necessary clearance from NCS.

Amnesty Office justifies return of foreign students

The Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme has dismissed the insinuation in some quarters that some students abroad, have returned to the country due to lack of resources to meet their financial obligations.

In a statement on Sunday from the media and Communication Consultant to the Amnesty Programme, Owei Lakemfa, the Office described the claim as untrue and misleading, saying that the students abroad and in the country on the Amnesty scholarship programme have since received their payments.

‘‘We wish to state that there is no iota of truth in the claims that some students abroad, have had to return to the country due to lack of resources to meet their financial obligation.
‘‘The students abroad and in the country on the Amnesty Scholarship Programme have received their payments,’’ the statement said.

APC chieftain advises Cross River govt. to prioritise agriculture

Calabar – Mr Hillard Etta, the National Vice Chairman (South-South), All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised the Cross River Government to prioritise agriculture.

Etta, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Sunday, said that prioritisng agriculture would lead to increased government revenue and job availability for the youth.

According to him, Cross River can produce the food the country needs if the available agricultural resources in the state can be harnessed.

“Rice, oil palm, and cocoa grow well in this state. If government focuses on the production and processing of these crops, it can change the fortunes of the state.’

“Cross River is the second largest producer of cocoa in the country and can produce all the rice and cocoa needed in this country, if the right thing is done.”

Buhari In Talks With Igbo Leaders Over Pro-biafra Protests – Presidency

The Federal Government is currently reaching out to some leaders of thought in the South-East to intervene in the growing pro-Biafra protests in that part of the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari has also received the assurances of state governors in the geopolitical zone that the issue has being adequately addressed.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this in an interview on Saturday.
Adesina was responding to a question on whether the President was considering inviting leaders of the protesters for talks or will use South-East governors and other leaders of thought to reach out to them.

Kenyan Police have arrested two men on suspicion of terror and espionage on behalf of the Iranian State Intelligence. The men, Abubakar Sadiq Louw,69, and Mojtaba Ghanbarian aka "Parsa" targeted key spots in Kenya, including hotels frequently used by Western tourists, businessmen and diplomats.

Louw, a senior figure in Nairobi Shiite Community was arrested on October 29 after a long intensive police investigation. He admitted recruiting young Kenyans to spy and mount terror attacks in Nairobi. Louw was working on behalf of the Qods Force, the clandestine overseas military wing of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which carries out the terror activities worldwide.

Five people were killed on Saturday in a double suicide attack by two women in the restive far north of Cameroon, the governor of the region said.

"Two women blew themselves up at around 6:00 pm" in the town of Dabanga, the governor of the far northern region, Midjiyawa Bakary, told AFP.

"The initial death toll is seven dead, including the two suicide bombers."

According to Punch, public funds that have been returned by some past government officials who looted the treasury while in power are currently with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari during an interactive session he had with members of the Nigerian community in the Islamic Republic of Iran had previously said that some past government officials who stole public funds had started returning parts of their loot voluntarily.
However, he did not disclose the identities of the former government officials who have so far returned parts of the looted fund or the amount returned to the public treasury.

Punch however, revealed that the returned loot is with the CBN, although the amount could not be immediately ascertained at the time of filing their report.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, confirmed that the looted fund was being returned to government coffers through the CBN.

A Kansas City man arrested for attacking his wife is also suspected of feeding his 7-year-old son to pigs after beating him to death.
Michael Jones, 44, was held after reports that he had assaulted his wife at their home and fired a gun at her.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree for sanctions against Turkey on Saturday, days after a Russian warplane was shot down in Turkey. Turkish Presdient Tayyip Erdogan expressed regret over the warplane incident earlier on Saturday, saying:

"We are truly saddened by this incident," Erdogan said. "We wish it hadn't happened as such, but unfortunately such a thing has happened. I hope that something like this doesn't occur again."

However, Putin wasn't moved by Erdogan's regret, instead he put an end to chartered flights from Russia to Turkey, a ban on some goods and bars extensions of labor contracts for Turks working in Russia,he didn't specify what goods are to be banned or give other details and a ban on Russian tourist companies’ vacation packages that include a stay in Turkey.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said there is no going back on the planned Kogi State governorship supplementary election scheduled for December 5.

As a mark of its preparedness, the commission said it had prepared its supplementary budget for the election.

The commission’s Deputy Director of Voters Education and Publicity, Mr. Nick Dazang, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday.

Kaduna targets 200,000 jobs

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has said the pro-poor programmes of his administration which include school feeding, planting of economic trees, and waste collection, are expected to create 200,000 jobs.

Obama denounces gun violence after latest deadly shooting

US President Barack Obama denounced the country’s epidemic of gun violence on Saturday and renewed a call for tougher controls on military-style weapons after yet another deadly shooting, saying “enough is enough.”

The latest bloodshed came on Friday when a man entered a family planning clinic in the state of Colorado and allegedly opened fire, killing three people, including a police officer, and wounding nine others.

The motive of the suspect now under arrest was not known and police were to interrogate him Saturday.

Mustapha, the sixth son of the late All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu has given details of how the Kogi legend passed on, soon after the elections were held, declaring that it was unthinkable to hang on to the illusion that his father was killed by anyone.

Audu passed on last Sunday, shortly before the Independent National Electoral Commission announced the outcome of the election in which he scored the majority votes.

What makes a President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces believe that relating with the law the way he wishes is the best pathway to democratic governance?

Now, the consequence of President Muhammad Buhari’s seeming lack of appreciation of due electoral process, or his decided indifference to the imperatives of engaging the full complements of the composition of a board for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, or both, is the controversial outcome of the Kogi State governorship election held penultimate Saturday.

In what is turning out to be a grand conspiracy fuelled by dishonesty and made worse by sheer incompetence, the decision of INEC to declare the election inconclusive is not only a rape on the electoral process but also dangerous to Nigeria’s democracy.

These had been damaged or neglected during the war. Ukpabi Asika planned to reconstruct and modernize these.

Action was also taken to upgrade and transfer to central government responsibility some trunk ‘B’ roads (1, 240 kilometers) and introduce some new federal highways and alignments… .” Dr. Okongwu was East Central State’s Commissioner forEconomic Planning from 1970-1975, and presumably has the data. But that’s besides the point. The real point is that assertion that the East had the “highest quality road density in Sub-sahara Africa” before the damages of war and neglect ruined it all.

As the government of Akwa Ibom State continues to put measures in place to boost industrial development in the state, Governor Udom Emmanuel has explained the rationale behind the interest free loan scheme, designed to boost the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the area.

Speaking, the governor stressed that the scheme was initiated to stimulate economic activities in the state, in order to create jobs for the people, especially the youths who need to be meaningfully engaged in productive activities. “We also create an enabling business environment for investors to operate, in order to boost economic activities in the state. For instance, in Akwa Ibom, we issue Certificate of Occupancy (CoF) within 60days, to encourage investments in the state. We only hold equity as value for the people, while the investors work freely to fast track development in various areas,” he said.

CATHOLIC Pontiff, Pope Francis, yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, extolled the virtues of His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze, who celebrated the golden jubilee of his Episcopal ordination.

The Pope, who was represented by the Papal Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Augustine Kassuja at the well-attended Pontifical Mass at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, described Arinze as God’s gift to humanity.

The on-going protests in the South-East requires creative handling by the federal government, governors of states that comprise the zone and Igbo leaders of thought to avoid unnecessary escalation of the situation. But the arrogant, insensitive, and threatening comments by a few military officers and cowardly hasty condemnation by some prominent Ndigbo are disingenuous, because both sides are trivialising the key issues of marginalisation, exclusion and alienation raised by the Biafran agitators, which lie at the heart of the troublesome unresolved “national question”.

It must be pointed out that President Buhari’s apparent indifference to the concerns of Ndigbo, from the time he was military head of state, through when he was Chairman, Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund to now that he is President, constitutes part of the remote and immediate causes of the renewed agitation for Biafra. It would take a Eureka experience or epiphany for Buhari to change his attitude towards Ndigbo generally. It follows that, on the issue of security and containment of centrifugal ethnic irredentism, there is no noticeable positive change since May 29, 2015.
