Marketers rev up fuel importation operations to end scarcity

The nation has in the past one month witnessed severe fuel scarcity that crippled operations in all sectors of its economy. UDEME AKPAN re­ports that the situation may improve this week as some operators have secured funds to import the prod­uct.
There are strong indications that the nation’s prolonged fuel scarcity may ease as some oil marketing companies have started to import fuel.
For instance, NIPCO Plc indicated that it had commenced the importa­tion of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS otherwise known as petrol, in support of the Federal Government moves to eliminate scarcity.
It dislcosed that the first consign­ment of imported product arrived via MT CHAMPION, which has already discharged 37 million litres in NIP­CO’s terminal in Lagos even in the face of the challenges in the down­stream sub-sector.

Shiroro Power to construct 3,000mw solar power plant

The management of Shi­roro Hydroelectric Power Station has concluded plans to construct a 300mega­watts, mw photo voltaic solar power plant in order to assist in increasing the nation’s capacity.
The project is to be located on the existing plant premises which were concessioned to the North- South Power Company, NSP Limited on November 1, 2013, the firm’s Chief Technical Officer, Mr. Roland Lwiindi, has disclosed.
Lwiindi gave the hint when the Post Privatisation Monitor­ing Team of the Bureau of Pub­lic Enterprises, BPE, recently went to monitor the power sta­tion in Shiroro, Niger State.

Stay off Syria, Obama warns Putin

US President Barack Obama yesterday warned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin against intervening in Syria’s civil war, suggesting that Pu­tin is aware of the dangers his country faces by entering the bloody conflict.
“I think Mr. Putin under­stands that, with Afghanistan fresh in the memory, for him to simply get bogged down in an inconclusive and paralyzing civil conflict is not the outcome that he is looking for,” Obama said at a news conference at the ongoing climate change Summit in Paris.
“I think it is possible over the next several months that we both see a shift in calculation in the Russians and a recognition that it is time to bring the civil war in Syria to a close,” the US leader added.

ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Paris raised alarm, saying that about five million persons living in the countries within the lake chad basin risk displacement owing to the depletion of the lake.
President who addressed a high level meeting on “Climate Change Challenges and Solutions in Africa’’, at the on-going UN Climate Change Conference, COP 21, in France urged to the world leaders to contribute to the $14 b needed to revive the lake.
He also stated that most Nigerians living in that axis have lost their lands to the disaster.
The President said the shrinkage of Lake Chad, a former island sea, had resulted in increased social conflicts, high rates of migration and cross border movements.

Brutal bully jailed for breaking 32 bones in gf's 6 month old baby

A brutal bully, 22 year old James Laidlaw, was jailed for 19 years after leaving his girlfriend's six-month-old son with 32 broken bones. He abused the defenceless tot over a three-month period. 
Warwick Crown Court in the UK heard he broke both of the baby's legs and arms and nearly every rib in his body.

Nurses said the boy went 'wide-eyed with fear' whenever there was a loud noise or someone approached him.
The baby is now in the care of the govt.

The sufferings and hardship currently witnessed by Nigerians across the country took a turn for the worse in Abuja in the last couple of days as Abuja Electricity Distribution Company‎ reduced power supply to the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states to an average of six hours.
This was in negation of recent claims by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, two weeks ago, that power supply had hit a new high of 4,488 megawatts (MW).
Vanguard observed that over a month, the power situation in Abuja took a turn for the worse, with households having to grapple with ‎exorbitant electricity bills despite the absence of electricity.

Appeal Court upholds Igbuya’s election

ASABA—THE Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, Tuesday, upheld the election of Mr Monday Igbuya, Delta State House of Assembly member representing Sapele constituency.

Federal Government College Ogbomosho Old School Association (FEGOCOOSA) has urged schools alumni to work together to revamp the ailing education system in Nigeria.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos,  FEGOCOOSA President, Mr. Francis Orbih said: “If only alumni of various schools can pull resources together, the education system will not be where it is today.”

US partners Nigeria on technology transfer

Dasuki: Buhari seeking vengeance with corruption fight – Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has described Tuesday’s arrest of the immediate-past National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) by men of the Department of State Services (DSS), as continuation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime of vengeance, saying “disobeying court order and later arresting and detaining the same person the court ordered to be allowed to travel abroad for medicare is the peak of dictatorship.”
Governor Fayose, who reiterated his support for the fight against corruption, maintained that it must be done within the ambit of the law and must not be used to seek vengeance.
He declared support for Dasuki’s demand for an open trial as against the federal government’s demand for a secret trial.

Nigeria a win away from U-23 AFCON semi

A win over Egypt this  evening in Mbour will seal Nigeria’s qualification to the last four of the U-23 AFCON in Senegal as well as set the tone for a 2017 AFCON double-header between the two countries in March.
Nigeria are top of Group B after a 3-2 win over Mali and another three points will guarantee them passage to the knockout stage of the tournament, which also doubles as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“Wins in our first two matches will qualify us for the semi-finals and that is what we are targeting,” declared Nigeria coach Samson Siasia.
