ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari, Tuesday, in Paris, raised alarm, saying that about five million persons living in the countries within the Lake Chad basin risk displacement owing to the depletion of the lake.

The President, who addressed a high level meeting on ‘Climate Change Challenges and Solutions in Africa,’ at the on-going UN Climate Change Conference, COP 21, in France, urged the world leaders to contribute to the $14 billion needed to revive the lake.

The sufferings and hardship currently witnessed by Nigerians across the country took a turn for the worse in Abuja in the last couple of days as Abuja Electricity Distribution Company‎ reduced power supply to the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states to an average of six hours.

This was in negation of recent claims by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, two weeks ago, that power supply had hit a new high of 4,488 megawatts (MW).
Vanguard observed that over a month, the power situation in Abuja took a turn for the worse, with households having to grapple with ‎exorbitant electricity bills despite the absence of electricity.

Appeal Court upholds Igbuya’s election

ASABA—THE Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City, Edo State, Tuesday, upheld the election of Mr Monday Igbuya, Delta State House of Assembly member representing Sapele constituency.

The appellate court, agreed with the ruling of the Election Petition Tribunal, Asaba,  which upheld Igbuya’s election, who is the Speaker of the House.

FEGOCOOSA tasks Alumni to revamp ailing schools

Federal Government College Ogbomosho Old School Association (FEGOCOOSA) has urged schools alumni to work together to revamp the ailing education system in Nigeria.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos,  FEGOCOOSA President, Mr. Francis Orbih said: “If only alumni of various schools can pull resources together, the education system will not be where it is today.”

According to him, in its quest to maintain standard in the school, 1995 set of Federal Government College Ogbomosho had donated desks and lockers for 150 students. Just as 85 set donated the industrial kitchen, while a set sunk boreholes.

OAU shut over students’ unrest

US partners Nigeria on technology transfer

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James Entwistle, says the US is ready to partner with Nigeria in the area of biotechnology and other areas of mutual interest to both countries.

Nigeria eyes ‘heavyweight’ coach

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick has revealed the country is shopping for a “heavyweight” coach to help solve the Super Eagles lack of goals under coach Sunday Oliseh.

“Our coach (Sunday Oliseh) is a very sound coach, but we have to develop a way to score goals and that is why we are looking at some heavyweight coaches to help us in this regard,” NFF boss Pinnick said.

Dasuki: Buhari seeking vengeance with corruption fight – Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has described Tuesday’s arrest of the immediate-past National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) by men of the Department of State Services (DSS), as continuation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime of vengeance, saying “disobeying court order and later arresting and detaining the same person the court ordered to be allowed to travel abroad for medicare is the peak of dictatorship.”

Governor Fayose, who reiterated his support for the fight against corruption, maintained that it must be done within the ambit of the law and must not be used to seek vengeance.

He declared support for Dasuki’s demand for an open trial as against the federal government’s demand for a secret trial.

Nigeria a win away from U-23 AFCON semi

A win over Egypt this  evening in Mbour will seal Nigeria’s qualification to the last four of the U-23 AFCON in Senegal as well as set the tone for a 2017 AFCON double-header between the two countries in March.

Nigeria are top of Group B after a 3-2 win over Mali and another three points will guarantee them passage to the knockout stage of the tournament, which also doubles as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“Wins in our first two matches will qualify us for the semi-finals and that is what we are targeting,” declared Nigeria coach Samson Siasia.

But on Sunday Siasia’s team almost marred a bright start to the U-23 AFCON when they capitulated in the second half against Mali after going 3-0 up in the first period.
